Overview
Zhi Zi Chi Tang — Gardenia and Prepared Soybean Decoction — is from Zhang Zhongjing’s Shang Han Lun. Just two herbs — Zhi Zi (Gardenia) and Dan Dou Chi (prepared soybean) — in elegant combination for lingering Heat in the chest after a febrile illness, producing restlessness, irritability and insomnia.
Zhang Zhongjing recognised this pattern as the residual phase of warm disease where the main pathogen has cleared but Heat lingers in the chest and disturbs the spirit. The formula gently disperses this Heat outward and upward.
I prescribe Zhi Zi Chi Tang as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan.

Frequently asked questions about Zhi Zi Chi Tang
What is Zhi Zi Chi Tang used for?
Zhi Zi Chi Tang is used for insomnia from heat in the chest — particularly post-illness or post-stress — see insomnia, restlessness and anxiety with chest oppression — see anxiety, post-viral irritability and sleep disturbance, mild low-grade fever after illness, stress-driven sleep disturbance with feeling of inner heat. The formula targets the underlying TCM pattern producing these symptoms rather than the symptom in isolation, which is why pattern diagnosis by a qualified herbalist is essential.
How does Zhi Zi Chi Tang work?
The herbs in Zhi Zi Chi Tang work together: Dan Dou Chi (fermented soybean, 6 9g) — aromatic; mildly releases heat outward and upward. The synergy of these actions addresses the underlying TCM pattern.

For most patients, an improvement is typically noticed within 2–4 weeks of daily granule treatment. Full benefit usually requires 6–12 weeks, depending on how long-standing the underlying pattern is. Zhi Zi Chi Tang is typically prescribed as part of an individualised treatment plan that may include other herbs or adjustments over time.
Is Zhi Zi Chi Tang safe in pregnancy?
